Riverdale offers a rare suburban feel within New York City’s Bronx, defined by its tree-lined streets, spacious single-family homes, and elegant

co-op and condominium buildings. It is home to a number of notable residents, including public officials and community leaders who are drawn to its charm, privacy, and quality of life.

The neighborhood features three main commercial districts, providing convenient access to everyday amenities. Key shopping corridors include Johnson Avenue, Riverdale Avenue, Mosholu Avenue, and Kappock Street. Along these areas, residents enjoy a mix of longstanding local “mom-and-pop” shops alongside diverse dining options, including Irish pubs, Italian restaurants, Japanese cuisine, and kosher establishments.

Riverdale is also home to some of New York City’s most respected schools, including Horace Mann School, Riverdale Country School, The Fieldston School, and Manhattan College.

Outdoor living is one of Riverdale’s defining features. Wave Hill offers stunning views of the Hudson River and the New Jersey Palisades, along with landscaped gardens, greenhouses, and woodland trails. The neighborhood also borders Van Cortlandt Park, which provides miles of hiking trails, sports fields, horseback riding, and open green space. Additional parks throughout Riverdale include dog runs, tennis courts, and a public golf course, adding to its outdoor appeal.

A Commuter's Dream

Commuting from Riverdale is both simple and efficient. The neighborhood is approximately a 20-minute drive or taxi ride to Midtown Manhattan, depending on traffic. It is served by two Metro-North stations—Riverdale and Spuyten Duyvil—with travel times of about 22 minutes to Grand Central Terminal. Express buses provide direct service to both the East and West Sides of Manhattan, as well as downtown financial districts during peak hours. The 1 subway line is also accessible at 242nd Street, offering additional connectivity.

Riverdale is made up of several distinct sections, each with its own character:

Central Riverdale: The neighborhood’s main commercial hub, roughly between Manhattan College Parkway and West 232nd Street.
Fieldston: A residential enclave south of West 250th Street, known for its historic homes and tree-lined streets.
Hudson Hill / Estate Section: A prestigious area above West 246th Street with expansive properties and river views.
North Riverdale: Located above West 254th Street, offering a quieter residential setting.
Spuyten Duyvil / South Riverdale: The southern gateway to the neighborhood, including shopping and transit access near West 231st Street and Broadway.
Villanova Heights: A small residential subdivision bordered by Fieldston Road and the Henry Hudson Parkway.
Historic Districts: Portions of Fieldston and Riverdale are designated historic districts, preserving their architectural and landscape character.

Riverdale also has a rich historical and cultural legacy. Wave Hill House has hosted notable figures such as Theodore Roosevelt in his youth, while John F. Kennedy once lived in the neighborhood. The area’s estate history dates back to the 19th century, when prominent Manhattan families built country homes here, including the Delafield estate, which helped shape the Fieldston section.

Today, Riverdale continues to offer a unique blend of nature, history, and city living. Residents enjoy proximity to shopping centers such as Ridge Hill and Cross County Mall, local markets including Garden Gourmet and Stop & Shop, and access to outdoor recreation in nearby parks and trails. Facts About Riverdale

Famous faces: The neighborhood already has a presidential history.

Teddy Roosevelt spent two summers in Wave Hill when he was 12 and 13,

and John F. Kennedy lived in the neighborhood from 1927 to 1929 at 252nd

Street (5040 Independence Avenue). George Washington stayed at the

Van Cortlandt House.

Screen time: Riverdale's Mount Saint Vincent College served as the location

of Law and Order's fictional Hudson University.

Estate District: Riverdale was a 19th-century estate district where many of

Manhattan's “big shots” built their country estates. In northern Riverdale,

for example, what is now Fieldston was part of the estate of Major Joseph

Delafield, who purchased 250 acres in 1829, and named it after his family's

estate in England.

Bits of info: A short 20 minute drive north gets you to the Cross County Mall

or the newer Ridge Hill Mall. Fresh Direct delivers to Riverdale.

Food Shops: There are also lots of stores for food shopping (Garden Gourmet

Market, BJ’s, Key Food, Stop and Shop and more).

Recreation: Van Cortlandt Park is nearby and there are many hiking trails there.
